What it is

Decorinyl is the trade name for tripeptide-10 citrulline, a short peptide made by the Spanish ingredient company Lipotec. Despite the INCI name, it has four units: lysine, aspartic acid, isoleucine and citrulline. It copies the part of decorin, a skin protein, that grips collagen fibers. Decorin keeps new collagen fibers thin and evenly sized; as skin ages there is less working decorin, and the fibers clump unevenly.

Lipotec's 2008 lab work screened a set of decorin-like tetrapeptides in a test-tube collagen assembly assay and picked this one because it made collagen fibrils thinner and more uniform, like decorin does. That is the only mechanistic evidence, and it was done with purified collagen, not skin.

One independent human trial exists. Greek researchers gave 24 women aged 30 to 60 one of four creams for 60 days: Decorinyl at 5% of the supplier's ingredient, Argireline at 10%, both, or neither. Decorinyl alone beat the placebo cream on one skin roughness measure at day 20, and some comparisons between the groups were significant at day 60. With 24 women split across four groups, this is weak evidence, and the peptides were supplied by Lipotec's Greek distributor.

How Decorinyl works

What it binds to, and what happens inside the body after that, step by step.

Outside the cell Inside the cell
Target Collagen fibrils (binds like decorin to regulate fibrillogenesis)

Decorin binds to collagen fibrils through its protein core and limits how thick and clumped they become, which keeps the dermis supple. Tripeptide-10 citrulline was built to copy decorin's collagen-binding site. In a lab collagen assembly assay it slowed fibril formation and made fibrils thinner and more uniform. Whether it reaches dermal collagen from a cream, and whether it changes collagen organization in living skin, has not been measured.

  1. 1 Applied to the skin Used in anti-wrinkle creams and serums, at 5% of the supplier's ingredient in the one published trial.
  2. 2 Has to reach the dermis Collagen fibers sit in the dermis below the outer skin; penetration of this peptide has not been measured.
  3. 3 Binds collagen like decorin It copies decorin's collagen-binding sequence and attaches to forming collagen fibrils.
  4. 4 More even collagen fibers In a test-tube assay, fibrils formed thinner and more uniform in diameter.
  5. 5 Suppler skin, finer lines The intended result. One 24-person trial gives limited support.

What the studies show

Human results and animal results are kept apart below. A result in rats tells you a mechanism is plausible. It does not tell you what happens in a person.

B Evidence

One small randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 24 women found Decorinyl alone improved one skin roughness measure versus placebo at day 20, with mixed results at day 60 and no irritation. The mechanism rests on a single supplier lab study using purified collagen. The grade reflects that one RCT exists, not that the effect is established.

In people 1

Randomized trial 2017

The efficacy study of the combination of tripeptide-10-citrulline and acetyl hexapeptide-3. A prospective, randomized controlled study

24 women aged 30 to 60 in Athens, randomized to Decorinyl, Argireline, both or a placebo cream (2 by 2 factorial design)

Decorinyl alone beat placebo on one roughness measure (cR3, P=0.028) at day 20; at day 60 it differed significantly from Argireline alone on cR2 and cR3, and no group reported irritation.

What nobody has measured yet

These are questions the published research has not answered.

  1. 01 Whether Decorinyl reduces wrinkles in a larger placebo-controlled trial.
  2. 02 Whether it reaches dermal collagen from a cream and changes collagen organization in living skin.
  3. 03 The pure peptide concentration in the supplier's ingredient and in commercial products.
  4. 04 Effects of use beyond 60 days.
  5. 05 A formal cosmetic safety assessment; none has been published.

No pharmacokinetic study exists in any species.

No human half-life has been published for Decorinyl, so we do not draw a clearance curve. Half-lives quoted online for it are usually estimates from animal data.

What people say online, checked against the studies

Tap a claim to see what the studies found.

The claim"Decorinyl builds new collagen."Not supportedThe evidence does not back this

It is designed to organize collagen fibers, not to increase collagen amount. The supplier itself says it targets collagen quality rather than quantity.

The claim"Decorinyl is clinically proven to reduce wrinkles."MixedSome studies agree, some do not

One 24-person trial found it beat placebo on one roughness measure at day 20, with mixed results by day 60. That is a weak signal.

The claim"Decorinyl and Argireline work better together."MixedSome studies agree, some do not

The 2017 trial tested exactly this pair. The combination differed from placebo on one measure at day 60, but the authors could not show clear synergy.

Combinations people discuss

These pairings come up often. Almost none have been tested together in a trial, and the evidence note on each says so plainly.

Decorinyl with Argireline

Pairs a collagen-organizing peptide with an expression-line peptide to target two causes of wrinkles.

EvidenceTested in a 24-woman factorial trial; the combination differed from placebo on one roughness measure at day 60, but no clear synergy was shown.

Frequently asked questions
What is Decorinyl?
It is the trade name for tripeptide-10 citrulline, a cosmetic peptide that copies the collagen-binding part of decorin, a skin protein that keeps collagen fibers even.
Why is it called tripeptide-10 citrulline if it has four amino acids?
The INCI naming counts only the three standard amino acids (lysine, aspartic acid, isoleucine) and names citrulline, a non-standard amino acid, separately.
Does Decorinyl work?
The evidence is thin. In a 24-woman trial it beat a placebo cream on one roughness measure after 20 days. The mechanism comes from a single lab study using purified collagen.
Is Decorinyl safe?
No irritation was reported in the one published trial, and the Cosmetics Europe database lists no restrictions. There is no formal safety assessment.
