When Matrixyl 3000's status or evidence changes, it's in the next morning's email.

What it is

Matrixyl 3000 is not one peptide but two, sold together by the French ingredient company Sederma, part of the Croda group. Palmitoyl tripeptide-1 is GHK, the same three amino acids as the copper peptide GHK-Cu but without copper, with palmitic acid attached. Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 is the four amino acids GQPR with palmitic acid attached. Sederma calls both matrikines, messenger peptides meant to tell skin cells to rebuild the support layer under the surface. It is a different product from the original Matrixyl, which is a single peptide, Pal-KTTKS.

Almost all the efficacy numbers come from Sederma. Its datasheet reports that 23 women aged 42 to 67 used a cream with 3% Matrixyl 3000 on half the face and a placebo cream on the other half for 2 months, and the area covered by deep wrinkles shrank 39.4% from the start on the Matrixyl side versus no significant change on the placebo side. Those results are compared to each person's starting point and were never published as a peer-reviewed paper.

Independent human data are thin. A 2024 Chinese eye-cream study and a 2009 US lip study used the peptides mixed with several other actives and had no placebo group. A 2026 University of Nottingham study in 3 women found both peptides spread through the outer dead skin layer but stayed between the cells, not inside them. Matrixyl 3000 is a cosmetic ingredient, not a drug.

How Matrixyl 3000 works

What it binds to, and what happens inside the body after that, step by step.

Outside the cell Inside the cell
Target Fibroblast matrix signaling (collagen and dermal-epidermal junction proteins); receptors not identified

Sederma describes both peptides as matrikines: messenger peptides that bind receptors on skin cells and switch on genes for rebuilding the support matrix. The palmitic acid tail is meant to help them get into skin. In Sederma's lab test on aging fibroblasts, the blend cut an aging marker called progerin by 27% and a senescence stain by 56%. None of this has been measured in living human dermis by independent researchers.

  1. 1 Applied to the skin The blend is put on in a cream or serum; Sederma recommends 3% of its Matrixyl 3000 solution in the finished product.
  2. 2 Moves through the outer layer In 3 women, both peptides were detected through every layer of the outer dead skin layer, decreasing with depth, and stayed on the outside of the cells.
  3. 3 Signals fibroblasts In Sederma's lab and skin-sample tests, the blend raised collagen and junction proteins and lowered aging markers in old fibroblasts.
  4. 4 Denser support layer Sederma reports thinner low-density bands under the epidermis on ultrasound after 1 to 2 months; this is supplier data.
  5. 5 Fewer visible wrinkles Sederma reports less deep-wrinkle area after 2 months. No independent placebo-controlled trial of the blend alone has been published.

What the studies show

Human results and animal results are kept apart below. A result in rats tells you a mechanism is plausible. It does not tell you what happens in a person.

C Evidence

The only placebo-compared human tests of the blend itself are Sederma's own half-face studies in 23 and 28 women, which are not peer-reviewed and report changes against each person's starting point. Independent human studies used the peptides inside multi-ingredient products without a placebo arm, so the blend's own effect has not been shown by anyone but the supplier.

How long it stays in the body

Half-life
Unknown in humans
Routes studied
Topical (creams, serums, eye creams)
Bioavailability
Not measured. In 3 women, both peptides spread through the outer dead skin layer within 30 minutes, with levels dropping with depth; whether any reaches the dermis was not measured.
Notes
No blood-level or dermis-level study exists in people.

No human half-life has been published for Matrixyl 3000, so we do not draw a clearance curve. Half-lives quoted online for it are usually estimates from animal data.

What people say online, checked against the studies

Tap a claim to see what the studies found.

The claim"Matrixyl 3000 is stronger than the original Matrixyl."UntestedNobody has measured this in people

The two are different peptides, and no published head-to-head human trial exists.

The claim"Matrixyl 3000 reduces wrinkles by 45%."MixedSome studies agree, some do not

Sederma's datasheet reports a 39.4% drop in deep-wrinkle area from baseline in 23 women; these are supplier numbers, not peer-reviewed, and the commonly quoted 45% figure was not found in the supplier document reviewed here.

The claim"Matrixyl 3000 contains copper peptide."Not supportedThe evidence does not back this

Pal-GHK uses the same three amino acids as GHK-Cu but carries a fatty acid instead of copper.

The claim"Matrixyl 3000 works as well as tretinoin."UntestedNobody has measured this in people

No published trial compares the blend with tretinoin or any retinoid.

Combinations people discuss

Frequently asked questions
What is in Matrixyl 3000?
Two peptides with fatty acids attached: palmitoyl tripeptide-1 (Pal-GHK) and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 (Pal-GQPR), in a water and glycerin base.
Is Matrixyl 3000 the same as Matrixyl?
No. Original Matrixyl is a single peptide, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Pal-KTTKS). Matrixyl 3000 is a blend of two different peptides. Both are Sederma products.
Does Matrixyl 3000 work?
Sederma's own half-face tests report less deep-wrinkle area after 2 months, but no independent placebo-controlled trial of the blend has been published.
What concentration of Matrixyl 3000 is used?
Sederma's tests used a cream with 3% of the Matrixyl 3000 solution, which is also its recommended use level. That 3% is the ingredient solution, not pure peptide.
Is palmitoyl tripeptide-1 the same as GHK-Cu?
No. Both are built on GHK, but palmitoyl tripeptide-1 has palmitic acid attached and no copper.
